We Are Worth Defending

Breaking Barriers for Black Women

The “We Are Worth Defending” (WAWD) initiative is making significant strides in the world of Empowerment Self-Defense (ESD) by addressing the unique challenges Black women face regarding safety and self-defense. Developed by IMPACT Safety and LifeCare Alliance, WAWD aims to empower Black women to understand their rights, set boundaries, and embrace their inherent power to defend themselves and others.

Why This Program Matters

Black women face disproportionately high rates of violence, yet often experience barriers to accessing self-defense training. The WAWD program seeks to break these barriers, ensuring Black women not only feel safe but also lead the movement for their community’s safety. Empowerment Self-Defense provides the tools to dismantle myths around aggression and self-protection, recognizing systemic inequalities and cultural challenges.

From Learners to Leaders

One standout aspect of the WAWD program is its emphasis on community leadership. Graduates of the training are encouraged to become certified ESD instructors, sharing their skills with others in their communities. By doing so, they become champions of safety and empowerment, multiplying the impact of the program across Ohio.
