Did You Know? Empowerment Self-Defense for Black Women

Join the Movement: Empowering women of color through boundary setting and self-defense.

Addressing Violence and Empowering Survivors

Did you know that Black women are 35% more likely to experience interpersonal violence in their lifetime? The “We Are Worth Defending” (WAWD) program is part of IMPACT Safety’s initiative to address this harsh reality. WAWD offers Empowerment Self-Defense (ESD), a trauma-informed and culturally competent approach that helps women of color build confidence, set boundaries, and learn self-defense skills that protect against all forms of violence—from microaggressions to physical assault.

More Than Self-Defense—It’s a Movement

The ESD program isn’t just about learning defense techniques—it’s about reclaiming autonomy and transforming lives. Shira, a student and now an instructor of ESD, shared how learning to establish boundaries helped her overcome years of feeling powerless. For many, this training empowers them not only to protect themselves but also to help others, building stronger communities.

The WAWD project also highlights barriers that prevent women of color from accessing self-defense training, such as time, cost, and cultural competency. To combat these challenges, WAWD has introduced scholarships, shortened course durations, and recruited Black women to be trained as instructors—ensuring representation and understanding in every aspect of training.
